Bluetooth tethering
« on: February 11, 2012, 05:56:24 AM »

Okay I have been extremely interested in tethering my TPT to my Droid Bionic. People have successfully tethered their bionic to XOOM, Galaxy tab, Ipad all via bluetooth. So I followed peoples steps

1. turn bluetooth on cellphone
2. make cell discoverable
3. turn airplane mode on tablet
4. turn bluetooth on tablet
5. make discoverable
6. scan for device on cell
7. pair devices
8. use the little wrench tool and connect to device for internet access on tablet

devices would find each other and successfully pair and share connection. When I went to use my browser on my tablet, it would say no connection. I started to give up hope. today I came across some people having a problem tethering their galaxy tabs now. So I tried to follow their steps which were different. One step I was not doing was switching the network mode to CMDA only. Once I put that step in, making it step 3, I then started getting web pages loading. Unfortunately that is as far I have gotten. I cannot get the pages to completely load.

I am not a computer tech person when it comes to this stuff. I also do not want to root either of my devices. I think there is something here but I need help or a miracle

***EDIT***

I DID IT!!

successfully paired and shared internet connection using unrooted droid bionic and unrooted TPT. There are no apps you need to download.

okay so after a few more hours of messing around with this damn thing I figured out the steps correctly

step 1. TPT airplane mode on
step 2. turn cell bluetooth on
step 3. go to mobile networks and switch to CDMA only
step 4. TPT bluetooth on
step 5. Make TPT discoverable
step 6. scan for devices on cell
step 7. select your TPT and connect or pair.
step 8. when you have the option to pair and verify pass code on both devices select pair on the cell phone first then TPT.
step 9. select the wrench and select share internet option. (at this point things should be up and running.)
step 10. this is not a forsure thing but I was able to go back to mobile networks and switch back to LTE/CDMA.

Okay so things are running smoothly and there was a difference when switch back to LTE. browsing was way faster.

I don't want that company trying to block this feature.

You're lucky this works without rooting either device. I have a different smartphone on a similar high-speed cellular broadband carrier, and I had to root the phone before I could get the host side of the bluetooth PAN to work.

However, I do agree (from personal experience) that the TPT does NOT need to be rooted in order to connect to a properly-configured bluetooth PAN. The question with this is just whether you need to root or tinker with your host device (which in many cases, the answer will be 'yes').

One can easily see the advantage of using a bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) if neither device required rooting, but, if rooting is required on the host device, would you expand on the advantages of a bluetooth PAN verses a WiFi PAN? All of the custom ROMS that I have used have a WiFi tethering app built in and due to convenience and ease has been my choice on the rare occasions that I have needed it. I will have to say on the occasions I have used bluetooth the power drain has been very unattractive.
